Active Ingredients

This band, founded by drummer Marko Marcinko, features guitarist John Hart, bassist Cliff Schmitt, and me on saxophones. We recorded a full-length album in the early 2000’s but it was never released. Here are 2 of my compositions from that recording, “Guitar Shuffle” and “Mother Night”.

Melodic Improvising Play-along with Saxophone

This recording is the group of play-along tracks that were published in my 2005 Advance Music book “Melodic Improvising” with my performance on saxophone, which is not to be heard on the book play-along. The format is not quite that which one might expect on a normal CD because the sax plays the theme, plays a solo and then the theme again, with no other solos. That being said, I want to offer these tracks because it may help those of you who have the book to hear how I approached improvising over the 14 tunes applying the principles that I wrote about in the book. It was a long night – 14 tunes with several takes of each tune, but I am proud to offer it to you nevertheless! The band features Andy Ezrin on piano, John Hebert on bass and Owen Howard on drums, and was recorded, mixed and mastered at Peter Karl Studios in Brooklyn in 2004, I think.

The Middle East Jazz Project

3. The Middle East Jazz Project was a recording that I made in the 90’s with keyboardist Henry Hey, drummer Owen Howard, bassist John Hebert, guitarist Brad Shepik and percussionist Todd Isler. I transcribed and composed music with the intention of bringing together 2 very disparate music sources. I never got very far with it, but these 2 tracks, recorded by Henry in his Queens, NY studio, are valuable results from this idea, which got 1 live performance. I also transcribed an Imam reading the Koran and some music from various countries, but those pieces never got recorded.

Live in Basel featuring Alex Sipiagin

Live in Basel featuring Alex Sipiagin is a recording from a concert in 2014 that my quartet played at the Bird’s Eye Jazz Club in Basel, Switzerland when trumpet player Alex stopped by and sat in with us. Tino Derado is the pianist, Paul Imm the bassist and Alan Jones the drummer. We played Monk’s “Evidence” and my composition “Worthy Opponent”.

Through the Trees Ahead

The track “Through the Trees Ahead” is a live recording (the only recording!) from the 2014 Vienna Sax Festival of my 3 movement piece for 9 saxophones and drums (Valentin Duit). The movements are entitled 1. “Through the Trees Ahead”, 2. “Shadow Side” and 3. “Release”.

Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds

The track “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” is an arrangement of mine that I’m fond of, featuring the band beaT:Less with Uli Soyka on drums, Christian Weber on bass, Uli Rennert on Rhodes, and Henrik Hallberg on guitar.
